Great Music on Sundays @5 presents “Boston Percussion Group” Sunday August 26, 5pm, UU Meeting House, Provincetown

The Great Music on Sundays @5 concert series presents BOSTON PERCUSSION GROUP on Sunday, August 26 at 5pm at the Unitarian Universalist Meeting House of Provincetown (236 Commercial Street, 508.487.9344).

Described as “audacious and impressive” by The Boston Globe, Boston Percussion Group (“BPeG”) is half new music group and half rock band, challenging the definition of classical music with the use of marimbas, drums, flowerpots and more. With repertoire that includes jazz, pop, modern and traditional ethnomusic, BPeG presents high-energy performances whether in a concert hall, museum or public park. Comprised of a core group of musicians, BPeG draws inspiration from local composers and has premiered their unique music throughout New England. The August 26 concert features music by Dave Brubeck, John Cage, The Jackson 5, Radiohead and Sufjan Stevens, as well as several compositions written for and premiered by BPeG. More information about BPeG is available at bostonpercussiongroup.com and facebook.com/ bostonpercussiongroup.

Brian Calhoon is the director of Boston Percussion Group. Brian presented a series of Marimba Cabaret concerts (marimbacabaret.com) this summer at the Unitarian Universalist Meeting House in Provincetown, with a stellar line-up of local and regional musicians. Brian says: “It’s been such a pleasure introducing the marimba to the Provincetown community with my show Marimba Cabaret, so it gives me such joy to bring Boston Percussion Group to the Unitarian Universalist Meeting House for their Cape Cod debut. I have invited three of Boston’s best percussionists to join me to show just how dynamic and versatile these instruments are. For this concert, as part of the Great Music on Sundays @5 series, the marimba will truly resonate in the beautiful and unique acoustics of the sanctuary concert hall. In all of the Meeting House’s long, storied history, I am willing to bet that audiences in Provincetown have never heard a concert like this before. Fans of Marimba Cabaret will enjoy seeing the marimba again, this time surrounded by even more percussion instruments, including a vibraphone and drum set alongside unusual found objects like flower pots, tuned pipes and more.”

The concert is sponsored by MarimbaOne, a California company that produces the world’s best marimbas. The marimba and vibraphone in the August 26 Boston Percussion Group concert were hand-crafted by the artisans of MarimbaOne.

Everyone is welcome to attend the concert. Admission is $20 at the door. Senior (65+) discounts are available at $15. Children ages 12 and under are admitted free. Tickets are available in advance online at brownpapertickets.com.
