It’s late October. A fierce Nor’easter is raging through Ptown. Anyone who’s ventured outside is drenched from the soaking rain. But at the world famous Lobster Pot, we shrugged off the storm with a phenomenal lunch that featured some of the best seafood I’ve ever tried!
The Lobster Pot has been a part of Provincetown’s dining landscape since the 1940’s and to this day serves the finest and
freshest in seafood, along with steaks, poultry, vegetarian dishes and Portuguese specialty dishes. Located on Commercial Street and overlooking historic Provincetown Harbor, The Lobster Pot welcomes hungry visitors with a charming, old-world atmosphere, a friendly, efficient staff and of course, fabulous food and drink.
Scott B and I ducked in out of the rain and were shown upstairs to the Top of the Pot, an upper level that was added in 1990. The staff – all of them in Halloween costumes, by the way – greeted us with big smiles and we were shown to our table. Our server, Matt, dressed as Deadpool, started us off with cocktails.
I ordered the Cape Cod Cherry Lime Ricky, a tall mix of vodka, cranberry juice, ginger ale, lime and a Luxardo
Maraschino cherry. Cool, crisp, refreshing and not overly sweet, this quaff had the flavor of a great cherry soda, but with the tang of lime and the kick of alcohol. Deceptively strong, but very tasty! Scott chose the Green Tea & Ginger Martini, made with green tea and ginger infused vodka and Domaine de Canton Ginger Liqueur. Smooth and strong, this drink came highly recommended
by Deadpool…I mean Matt!
Our appetizers arrived soon after. We sampled the Lobster Egg Roll – lobster meat, cabbage, carrot, and green onion, wrapped in a crispy, deep fried wrapper and served with a Thai Chili
dipping sauce. Hot, fresh and crunchy, the sweet lobster lent itself beautifully to the Asian preparation and made a great starter. We also tried the Steamers – plump steamed clams served with drawn butter. These perennial favorites were super fresh, contained not a speck
of grit and tasted of the ocean just outside. Simple perfection! The Baked Portuguese Clams were a delicious take on the old Italian classic – six Littleneck clams topped with linguiça, panko crumbs and Parmesan cheese. The smoky, mildly garlicky Portuguese sausage and the nutty, vaguely salty cheese played nicely off the briny sweetness of the clams. Yum!
Scott had ordered the Portuguese Soup as his main. Perfect for a chilly, rainy day, this hearty soup was made with kale, potatoes, red kidney beans, meaty chunks of
chorizo and more of that delectable, smoky Portuguese linguiça sausage. Now, MY
main was another story entirely! I chose the Lobster Grilled Cheese. I’m not sure there are words to describe how unbelievably delicious…and possibly addictive this sandwich was! Huge chunks of fresh lobster enrobed in a combination of Camembert, Swiss and American cheeses, along with piquillo peppers and large pieces of artichoke hearts. The sharp flavor of the Camembert, and the nutty quality of the Swiss cheese made for a creamy, savory mix that was rich and irresistible. Add to that the earthy
artichokes and the brightly flavored peppers, both of which added a touch of acidity to cut through the richness and grill that magical mixture between thick slices of country white bread and it was sheer sandwich perfection! I’m going to dream of that sandwich for a long time to come! That alone will be reason enough to return to Ptown!
As we were on our way out, we spoke to Shawn, one of the owners of The Lobster
Pot. An outgoing, genial man, he was so pleased at how much we had enjoyed our
experience, he even took me into the kitchen to watch the chefs preparing some of the restaurant’s signature dishes, including the Pan Roasted Lobster with leek and fine herb butter sauce. He was clearly proud of his establishment, his staff and of course, the unbelievable food! I was so honored to be invited behind the scenes, as it were and thanked him profusely! He said that the next time we come to The Lobster Pot, I’ll HAVE to try that pan roasted lobster and I surely will. But I don’t know…that Lobster Grilled Cheese will be calling my name!
