John Cameron Mitchell in Conversation with John Waters – Saturday, June 15 at Provincetown Town Hall

John Cameron Mitchell

John Cameron Mitchell, who won the Provincetown International Film Festival’s Audience Award for Hedwig and the Angry Inch in 2001, will return to Provincetown to accept the festival’s highest filmmaking honor, 2019 Filmmaker on the Edge, in conversation with resident artist John Waters. Mitchell’s original musical podcast Anthem: Homunculus available on Luminary Media.

John Cameron Mitchell’s most celebrated creation so far, Hedwig and the Angry Inch, was modeled on the “great queens of the world singing punk rock” at the now legendary club SqueezeBox! in mid-1990’s New York City. The nightspot was where Mitchell first met John Waters. “It’s where Hedwig was born. [Composer-lyricist] Stephen Trask was in the house band, as was my boyfriend Jack, who passed away in 2000. I was learning from the great queens.”

Audiences at this year’s PIFF can see the 2001 film of Hedwig that Mitchell and Trask adapted from their 1998 Obie Award-winning musical, when it screens on Thursday at Town Hall at 9:30pm.. Mitchell will sit down for a conversation with Waters at FPIFF’s Awards Ceremony at 5pm on Saturday, at Town Hall.
